Private Practice Roadmap

Helping Canadian Social Workers & Counsellors Find Private Practice Success

The Private Practice Roadmap Self-Paced Online Course

Are you a Canadian Social Worker, Counsellor or Mental Health Professional dreaming of starting your own private counselling practice? Do you feel overwhelmed, unsure, and confused by the amount of information out there? Or maybe you don’t even know the first step of where to get information?

Then this course is for you!

This is the course for social workers, counsellors and mental health professionals who are looking for guidance, encouragement and support on making the leap into private practice. It’s the business knowledge you didn’t get in grad school in an easy-to-follow format designed just for you. It’s also super affordable, at only $198 CAD.

What Does The Course Cover?

Here is the Map:

Module One: Your Practice

This module will help you to identify who YOU are as a clinician in private practice. First, we look inward towards your goals, life, strengths, and weakness. THEN, we start to create the vision together of what your practice will look like. In this module, you will clarify YOUR vision of who you are as a therapist, and who your practice is designed to serve.

Module Two: Your Website

Your website is the place where you clarify, distill and represent the work you do in the real world on the digital page. In this module, you will learn website dos and don’ts, a bit about design and a lot about copy. We focus on the non-technical elements of a successful, useful website so your clients can find you, using real-world examples.

Module Three: You’re Legit

One of the first acronyms I learned in my first social work job was C.Y.A.. which stands for “Cover Your Ass”. In this module, we talk about the sometimes boring but incredibly necessary elements of private practice, such as your business license, insurance, confidentiality agreements, practice management system, collecting taxes, supervision, and legal and ethical responsibilities. We break the overwhelm into bite-sized chunks so you can move past the overwhelm and get down to seeing clients.

Module Four: Your Marketing

When I first started marketing my practice I quickly discovered that most “traditional” marketing advice doesn’t quite fit when it comes to therapy. I had to seek out ways to attract clients without feeling like an unethical sleaze ball, and that were in line with my social work/therapist values. In this module, I will share what I learned and how you can make marketing work for you in a sustainable and effective way.

Module Five: Your Money

Money is what makes your practice a business and not a hobby. In this module, we will answer your questions on start-up expenses, ongoing expenses, what to charge, sliding scale, how to get paid, tax planning, how to raise your fees and how to track your income and expenses. We will also delve into the (SUPER FUN) subject of “money mindset” AKA how to get out of your own way to get paid what you deserve.

Module Six: Your Sustainable Practice

It’s up and running! By now you are starting to see real progress and your practice is moving swiftly from a “pipe dream” to reality. You have a clear idea of what you need to do to move forward and you may even have your first client! Once the honeymoon period wears off it is crucial to think about how to prevent burnout, find community, practice self-care and set boundaries so you can serve clients for as long as it serves you.

Who am I and why did I create this course?

Hi! I am Jill!

I am a Canadian Social Worker, Counsellor and Coach.

I can confidently and emphatically report that I love my job.

But it wasn’t always that way…

Before I started my practice I worked for a large health system. I met some great clients and co-workers.

But after five years I was tired…

  • I was tired of being told how, when and who I could help
  • I was tired of feeling like I did not have enough to offer my clients
  • I was tired of watching people be let down by "the system"
  • I was tired of not having the work/life balance I needed to prevent burnout
  • I was bogged down by bureaucracy and politics
  • I wanted to make more money
  • I knew I needed a change

Although I am now self-employed full-time, that was not always my plan. Initially, I started it as a “Social Work Side Hustle”. My goal was balance, self-expression and a little bit of extra money. With time, I gained the courage and resolve to cut off the “golden handcuffs”. That may not seem like the right choice for you, but it was for me.

But I would be lying if I said it was easy.

I made mistakes. I faltered and doubted myself. And most of the time I felt like I was plugging along in the dark alone. I knew once I had “cracked the code” and had my ideal practice that I wanted to help others find their way as well.

This has been my passion (obsession?) since 2018, and I have poured time, money and energy into learning all I can about running a successful private practice. I want to share what I have learned with you. So,

I created this course because it is what I needed when I started!

Private Practice Road Map is for you if:

  • You feel overwhelmed just thinking about all the steps to take and stuff to know when it comes to starting your own practice.
  • You don’t even know where to start and you don’t know who to ask.
  • You have googled a few things, but the information was confusing and weird. You felt more perplexed than ever.
  • You would love to work with clients who WANT to work with you.
  • The thought of setting your own hours makes you gleeful.
  • It seems like most of the information available is geared towards therapists in the USA, and you need support suitable for the Canadian landscape.
  • You feel like you know nothing about business, and “marketing” is what you do on a Saturday morning to get your fresh vegetables.
  • You wish your grad school had a course on private practice logistics in addition to clinical competence.
  • You have a job you like, but it isn’t quite paying the bills. You’d love a little something extra to tuck away, make ends meet, save for a vacation or pay off debt.
  • You are starting to feel a bit burnt out, and suspect the current situation is not sustainable forever. You’d love an “exit plan”.

This program is not for you if:

      Do You Have Questions??

      Here are some answers:

I want to start a private practice, but I don’t know if I am qualified. How do I know I am ready?

Great Question! And really, your feelings of readiness depend on you. But I will say this: You do not need a Ph.D. to help people (but it’s pretty cool if you do have one). You have something to offer. There will always be people with more and less experience/qualifications/ certifications/courses and education than you. The real questions are “What do you have to offer?” “How can you help people?” “How can you emphasize your strengths while being transparent about your limitations?”. This course is designed for Canadian Social Workers, Counsellors, Therapists and Mental Health professionals with different credentials across the provinces and territories.

      Will I get a certificate?

No. This course is for information, support, personal development and fun only. It will not certify you to do anything.

Will you be covering any clinical counselling topics or teaching any modalities?

No. This course covers the practical aspects of starting a private therapy business. It does not teach counselling, psychotherapy, social work, or any other clinical topics.

      What is the investment?

The program currently costs $198.00 for all the videos, workbooks, resources and information.

For perspective, a mental health clinician in private practice usually charges at least $150-175 per hour. Math is not my best thing, but my calculations show that your new private practice will pay for the course in less than 2 client hours.

And yes. You can write it off.
