Are you a Canadian Social Worker or Mental Health Professional dreaming of starting your own private counselling practice? Do you feel overwhelmed, unsure, and confused by the amount of information out there? Or maybe you don’t even know the first step of where to get information?
Then Private Practice Road Map is for you!
Private Practice Road Map is an Online Course designed to take you from wishful to having your own successful “social work side hustle” with a thriving part-time practice.
Hi! I am Jill!
I am a Canadian Social Worker, Counsellor and Coach.
I can confidently and emphatically report that I love my job.
But it wasn’t always that way…
Before I started my practice I worked for a large health system. I met some great clients and co-workers. But after five years I was tired…
- I was tired of being told how, when and who I could help
- I was tired of feeling like I did not have enough to offer my clients
- I was tired of watching people be let down by "the system"
- I was tired of not having the work/life balance I needed to prevent burnout
- I was bogged down by bureaucracy and politics
- I wanted to make more money
- I knew I needed a change
Although I now work in my practice full time, that was not always my plan. Initially, I started it as a “Social Work Side Hustle”. My goal was balance, self-expression and a little bit of extra money. With time, I gained the courage and resolve to cut off the “golden handcuffs”. That may not seem like the right choice for you, but it was for me.
But I would be lying if I said it was easy.
I made mistakes. I faltered and doubted myself. And most of the time I felt like I was plugging along in the dark alone. I knew once I had “cracked the code” and had my ideal practice that I wanted to help others find their way as well.
This has been my passion (obsession?) since 2018, and I have poured time, money and energy into learning all I can about running a successful private practice. I want to share what I have learned with you. So,
I created Private Practice Road Map because it is the program I needed when I started!
How does it work?
When you join the Private Practice Road Map you get instant access to all the Modules, so that you can start to work on setting up your business right away! The info will be at your fingertips immediately.
You can binge-watch the videos and devour the resources right away. Or, you can slowly work through the information, digesting it in bite-sized pieces so you don’t get overwhelmed.
Or, a combination of both styles. You do you.
Some folks like to see the whole map before they start the journey. Some prefer to complete each task before they move on to the next.
Either way, this map will get you to where YOU want to be.
Here is the Map:
Module One: Your Practice
This module will help you to identify who YOU are as a clinician in private practice. First, we look inward towards your goals, your life, your strengths and your weakness. THEN, we start to create the vision together of what your practice will look like.
What are your hours? How many clients per week will you serve? Will you be virtual or office based? What are you clinical specialties, modalities and qualifications? Who are your ideal clients?
Through discussions, exercises and self reflection you will develop a clear vision of who you are and who you help.
Module Two: Your Website
They say your website is the microcosm of your practice. It is the place where you clarify, distill and represent the work you do in the real world translated onto the digital page.
In this module we talk about website dos and don’ts, a bit about design and a lot about copy. I will answer non-technical questions about the elements of a successful, client-attracting, stand-out from the crowd (in a good way) website.
Module Three: You’re Legit
An acronym I learned in my first Social Work job was C.Y.A. Possibly you are familiar with this abbreviation, but for the uninitiated, it stands for “Cover Your Ass”.
In this module we talk about the sometimes boring but incredibly necessary elements of a private practice like your business license, insurance, confidentiality agreements, practice management system, collecting taxes, supervision, and your legal and ethical responsibilities.
Module Four: Your Marketing
When I fist started marketing my practice I quickly discovered that most “traditional” marketing advice doesn’t quite fit when it comes to therapy. The consultant I hired made great suggestions such as “pay a referral fee to other counsellors” or “run a sale where you give a huge discount”. Of course, the first suggestion is against the Social Work Code of Ethics. And offering a discount was tempting, but ultimately I decided that I didn’t want to get a reputation for selling cut-rate, substandard therapy.
I eventually found ways to market that feel GOOD to me, and attract my ideal right-fit clients. In this module I will share what I learned and how you can make it work for you.
Module Five: Your Money
Money is what makes your practice a business and not a hobby. In this module we will answer your questions on start-up expenses, ongoing expenses, what to charge, sliding scale, how to get paid, tax planning, how to raise your fees and how to track your income and expenses. We will also delve into the (SUPER FUN) subject of “money mindset” AKA how to get out of your own way to get paid what you deserve.
Module Six: Your Sustainable Practice
It’s up and running! By now you are starting to see real progress. Your practice is moving swiftly from “pipe dream” to reality. You have a clear idea on what you need to do to move forward. You may even have your first client! Once the honeymoon period wears off a bit it is crucial to think about how to prevent burn out, find community, practice self care and set boundaries so you can serve clients for as long as it serves you.
Here are some answers:
When do we start?
I plan to have the program up and running by fall 2022! If you want to stay up-to-date on my progress, join the email list HERE. I will be offering an early bird rate to email subscribers first, so stay tuned so you don’t miss out!
I want to start a private practice, but I don’t know if I am qualified. How do I know I am ready?
Great Question! And really, your feelings of readiness depend on you. But I will say this: You do not need a Ph.D. to help people (but it’s pretty cool if you do have one). You have something to offer. There will always be people with more and less experience/qualifications/ certifications/courses and education than you. The real questions are “what do you have to offer?” “How can you help people?” “How can you emphasize your strengths while being transparent about your limitations?”.
This course is designed for Canadian Social Workers, Counsellors, Therapists and Mental Health professionals with different credentials across the provinces and territories. If you are not sure if you have the necessary qualifications to operate a private practice, please reach out to your regulatory body. I will say that in my time talking to fellow clinicians about private practice, the vast majority sell themselves short rather than over-estimate their abilities. That’s why we cover imposter syndrome right in the first module!
Will I get a certificate?
Will you be covering any clinical counselling topics or teaching any modalities?
What is the investment?
The program costs $297.00.
For perspective, a Social Worker in private practice usually charges at least $140-$160 per hour and often sees four people in a day. Math is not my best thing, but my calculations show that your new private practice will pay for the course in about half a day, or in 2 to 3 client hours.
And yes. You can write it off.
